Women in Sport at Raynes Park Physio

At Raynes Park Physio, we offer specialised services tailored for women in sports. Our expertise lies in assessing, treating, and rehabilitating various sports injuries among female athletes. We particularly focus on athletic pregnancies and helping women return to sports and exercise postnatally. Our team comprises specialists in women’s health, pelvic health, musculoskeletal, and sports physiotherapists who collaborate to create personalised rehabilitation programs for our clients.

Antenatal Sport and Fitness

It is important to maintain strength and cardiovascular fitness throughout pregnancy, in preparation for delivery of your baby and for life as a new mum. At MSO Physio we offer safe, physio-led pregnancy training programmes for all women. These are evidence based and tailored to the individual.

Our physio-led pregnancy-safe training programmes include strengthening, cardiovascular fitness, mobility, core exercises and pelvic floor muscle training. Following a comprehensive assessment, we evaluate your past medical history and current exercise level to prescribe a personalised, pregnancy-safe exercise programme tailored to suit your needs. Your pregnancy exercise programme can then be completed independently or with one of our pregnancy-trained therapists. We recommend starting the programme as soon as you feel well enough following your positive pregnancy test. The exercises are gradually progressed and started at the level which is right for you, so should be manageable around how you are feeling throughout the pregnancy.

Hypermobility

Hypermobility, often first seen in teenage girls, can significantly benefit from physiotherapy. After a thorough assessment, we create bespoke exercise programs targeting key muscles. These programs typically combine stability, endurance, proprioceptive, and strengthening exercises. We also offer clinical Pilates classes, which can be beneficial for individuals with hypermobility.

Energy Deficiency Syndromes

Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-s) occurs when there is a mismatch between energy expenditure and intake. This condition is prevalent among female athletes. We work with Sports and Exercise Medicine Consultants to rehabilitate athletes suffering from RED-s. The treatment usually involves a period of rest, conditioning unaffected areas, followed by a gradual return to loading under the guidance of our specialised female health and sports physiotherapists.

ACL Injury Prevention

Our ACL injury prevention programs are designed to reduce the risk of ACL injuries among female athletes. Currently, there is a high incidence of ACL injuries in young female athletes, attributed to various factors such as hormones, muscular control systems, biomechanical differences, and sports equipment design. We utilise the latest research to create individualised ACL injury prevention programs for athletic females.

Menopause and Exercise

Menopause brings various physiological changes that can impact musculoskeletal health. We take a comprehensive medical history to consider the range of factors influencing health during menopause. Our menopause-specific rehabilitation programs include resistance training to optimise bone health.

Breast Health

Breast weight can be a barrier to sports, fitness and physical activity. Breasts can change in size and appearance throughout the menstrual cycle and during pregnancy, breast-feeding and due to the menopause. Breast weight can affect our posture and can contribute to neck, back and shoulder pain. Wearing an optimally fitting bra, combined with strengthening the postural muscle systems will likely improve your symptoms and improve your posture and confidence to engage in exercise. An optimally fitting sports bra is likely to improve your sports performance, through making movement more physically economical and comfortable.

We can advise on bra types and make recommendations on the most suitable type for you and your sporting activity. We can advise on bra fitting, ensuring you are happy with how to make sure your bra fits you correctly and provides the necessary support.

All women would benefit from physiotherapy postural and bra advice, from teenagers through to post-menopausal women. Our comprehensive physiotherapy assessment will look at your posture, spinal health and current bra support. Following this, we formulate an individualised treatment plan which may consist of postural exercises, neck and back exercises, manual therapy, soft tissue work and advice on bra type and bra fitting.

"Cannot recommend the clinic highly enough. Nick treated my daughter after knee surgery. Hugely thorough, knowledgeable and caring. There are physio teams and physio teams.... This is the best I've experienced in years."

"Nick helped me after I started experiencing pain in my hip/leg from weightlifting. He not only identified and guided me through fixing the problem, but has also given me a great deal of valuable advice for my training. Very happy with the results, would definitely recommend."

This is probably the best physio practice I've been to. I've been to other 'professional' physios that provide treatment for the sake of appearing to do something. The first session is generally a consultation to examine the issues. The ongoing advice and treatment is fantastic."
